SOLE- Self-Organising Learning Environments

What do children really want to learn, and can this curiosity and desire be translated into deep and meaningful learning?

Sugata Mitra’s method of SOLE- short for Self-Organising Learning Environments came from …the Hole in the Wall experiment, in the slums of Delhi. He noticed if one left a group of kids alone with a computer and internet, they would organise their own learning and achieve incredible results.

At SOLE, we encourage kids to reimagine the classrooms as spaces for discovery where students are given the tools to succeed as the teacher stands back and “watch the learning happen. The self‐organizational educational process is not about making learning happen, it is about letting it happen.

This is a student‐centered education where teachers invest in the development of the learners. Within a SOLE paradigm, power would shift decisively to students, as all choices—study resources, examples that might be used in class, criteria to be applied to measure a certain course proficiency — would be made by students.

SOLEs are real life. They are the real world, and they are an ideal. Eventually we want our children to enter the world, bright eyed, ready for any challenge- especially the unanswerable. We want them to innovate, create and discover. We want them to push the boundaries of discovery. We want them to most importantly take charge of what they want and drive their own futures.

SOLE - Summer Camp (Course Name)

This course will entirely be leaner-driven and minimally invasive. Focusing on growth mindset and resilience. The facilitator will observe, encourage, provide resources that facilitate learning. The best part of the course is that it will highlight what children really want to learn, and this curiosity and desire will be translated into deep and meaningful learning

I think it was a great and brave idea on the part of Paradise school to set up a meeting for all of India. India has more than 1.2 billion people and I think it really worked out.
Everyone was working together nicely, the group I was in, they collaborated very well all together, even on the out screen they answered Sugata Mitra’s questions well.

Since these 3 testimonials are just after you’ve introduced your course, they should focus on how the course helped customers to obtain a huge benefit.

Mia

I really liked that we did SOLE with 500 children in India. I enjoyed it. The room was without a teacher, so we took time to get to know each other- but it worked out. It took a few minutes- we started chatting on the chat first.
We had written down all our opinions collaboratively. I want to do this SOLE session again.

Madih

Designation

I really liked being with people I didn’t know so I could get to know them. Our group had no teacher but we started talking and answering the question. We didn’t need a teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the basic idea behind S.O.L.E.?

The premise behind the S.O.L.E. strategy lies in the theory that students are capable of learning for themselves and also teaching themselves. The strategy is based on collaboration and explanatory talk with a question /provocation being used as the basis for internet research. Children learn in small groups which they organise themselves, with teachers taking a significantly lesser role in the learning process. Students are free to discover content with minimal teacher intervention. Once content is discovered and shared, a skilled teacher negotiates evidence of learning and the application of knowledge with their students.

Who can attend this course?

Kids within the age group of 8 to 14 years can join this course.
Group 1: 8-10 years
Group 2: 11-14 years

Why is the question so important?

For two reasons. Firstly a good question promotes deeper responses and greater diversity of response. We have discovered that “How” or “Why” questions are more effective than “What” questions. Secondly in most cases the question is drawn from the content teachers are required to teach. This means that educators have a clear link back to their content requirements and at the same time are allowing students access to the content from different viewpoints. Great questions tend to get the students thinking beyond the classroom.
